The AAP effect... 40 inspectors say no to station house officer’s post...

At a time when Delhi Police is facing an acute crunch of station house officers who can handle police stations efficiently, what has got them even more worried is a written refusal from around 40 senior inspectors who have declined to become SHOs, sources have told TOI.

The department is currently holding interviews at the police headquarters for the transfers of inspectors and a huge reshuffle is expected in a fortnight. The trend, however, is believed to lead to a situation where incompetent but willing officers are going to be seated in that chair which attracts maximum responsibility at the ground
level.

The revelations came to fore when the inspectors were called in for screening before a panel comprising a special commissioner and joint commissioners. As per procedure, they had to fill a form with their details, proof of willingness to be posted as an SHO and five choices of venue in case of transfers.

The matter on forms filled by ace investigators and experienced inspectors was thought provoking. Those who have been at the centre of numerous high profile cases and were considered excellent managers of their police stations now want to shift to "non-sensitive" posts like special branch, police training college, security and traffic.

When TOI spoke to the SHOs, they termed the post as "too sensitive" in today's times."The SHOs are considered the money making devils. They are not only bombarded with paper work—their day is spent filing diaries, but are also answerable for anything happening within their jurisdiction. At times, joint commissioners bypass the DCP and directly begin to deal with them which just increase their worries. In case of any allegations, they are not even given a chance to speak but are first sent to district lines or even suspended," said an inspector on condition of anonymity.

Another inspector, who was recently removed from the police station in south district on flimsy grounds, says he was not surprised. "Would you want to work like a machine and be treated like a slave?" he asked.

Another inspector says, "We have no offs but then get nothing in return as the department assumes that an SHO always has a good time. The post is nothing but a headache now which is sure to ruin your career," he said.
